Department of Labor announces availability of $1.8 million in grants

The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the availability of approximately $1.8 million for up to six grants through the Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations program (WANTO).

The grants will support innovative projects that improve the recruitment, hiring, training, employment and retention of women in apprenticeships within industries such as advanced manufacturing, transportation and construction.

New study finds family violence can lower a child’s IQ

Children exposed early in life to interpersonal trauma, maltreatment or witnessing partner violence against their mothers, have lower Intelligence Quotient (IQ) related scores at 2, 5 and 8 years of age, find researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota.

MLB ballparks predicted to serve 20.5 Million hot dogs in 2012

In an election year where nothing seems certain, Americans are frank about their top concession at the ballpark, as the hot dog remains the favorite food for fans from Fenway to San Francisco Bay.

According to a report released today by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council on Major League ballparks, Americans will consume 20.5 million hot dogs this season, enough to round the bases 28,489 times, and if laid end to end would stretch from the new Marlins Ballpark in Miami to Coors Field in Denver. In addition, the Council projects ballparks will sell 5.2 million sausages this year.

Law enforcement seeks public’s help in two bank robberies

The FBI and the Philadelphia Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance to locate and identify subjects responsible for two separate bank robberies. Both robberies took place in Philadelphia. The first robbery occurred on Tuesday, April 3 at the Beneficial Bank on Chew Avenue and the second occurred on Wednesday, April 4 at the Wells Fargo Bank located at 700 Adams Avenue.

Governor Corbett’s proclamation of Financial Education Month

WHEREAS, financial education is essential to ensure that Pennsylvanians of all ages are prepared to manage money, credit, investments and debt; and

WHEREAS, increasing the financial literacy of Pennsylvanians can improve the quality of their lives, provide them with skills for success, as well as strengthen the commonwealth’s economy; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Banking, through its moneysbestfriend.com website, provides consumers with a trusted source of information about personal money management issues and connections to local financial education resources, and through its Consumer Services outreach, assists thousands of Pennsylvanians each year make informed decisions on financial matters; and

WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Securities Commission promotes wise and safe investing through its investor education and entrepreneur education programs; and

WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency supports financial education for home owners, home buyers and home renters, and offers programs to assist community-based organizations provide financial education to individuals and families across the commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, many Pennsylvania banks will participate in “Teach Children to Save Day” on April 24 and credit unions will participate in “National Credit Union Youth Week,” which will be celebrated from April 22-28, during which financial professionals will visit schools and teach young people basic principles of saving and spending; and

WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, is working to improve financial education in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

THEREFORE, in special recognition of the importance of affordable, accessible, high-quality financial education, I, Tom Corbett, Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, do hereby proclaim April 2012 FINANCIAL EDUCATION MONTH in Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens, parents, teachers, community leaders, and others to seek ways to improve their own personal finance habits.
